|Saint Monica represents the mother’s religious role in the lives of her children.
Saint Monica spent her life trying to get her children to follow in the faith and this was true for two of her three children but not for her son Augustine, who converted three months before Saint Monica’s death. After his conversion, he was later canonized. Her dedication to the faith was important to the events that later allowed her son to be canonized. She is shown in an attitude of prayer as a mother who never loses faith or hope in the eventual conversion of her children.
Her predella below she is shown with the young Augustine as he is being led to baptism by Saint Ambrose at Hippo.
