|Saint Veronica is a symbol of compassion and charity
When Jesus stumbled under the weight of the Cross, Saint Veronica pushed through the crowd and used her veil to wipe the blood and sweat from his face. The image of Christ’s face was left imprinted on the veil. Saint Veronica’s gaze is slightly averted, as it typical, so that the viewer is drawn to the face of Jesus which gazes out from the cloth which she invariably holds. Saint Veronica appears with Saint Martha opposite the Blessed Virgin and Mary Magdalene, representing women who attended to the physical welfare of the Lord.
The predella features her shield which bears a cross symbolizing her fellowship with Christ.
