|Saint Agnes was a young woman so devoted to her faith that she died for it.
Saint Agnes was martyred during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian. She was beheaded when she refused to renounce her commitment to God.
Saint Agnes appears holding a lamb, a reference both to her name and to her devotion to Christ, the Lamb of God. Saint Agnes is also depicted with a martyr’s palm. In her shield is a lily, symbolizing her purity.
